Our schools workshops

Workshops for schools and colleges form an important part of MDD's work. Information on our workshop For the Love of Shakespeare can be found below. For details of our exciting new project, The Tempest Transformed, click here.

For the Love of Shakespeare

A participatory two-hour workshop aimed at A-level English, drama and music students, in conjunction with an evening performance of “For the Love of Shakespeare”, one of our most popular programmes.

After a short introductory session exploring the importance of music and musical imagery in Shakespeare’s plays, MDD’s musicians demonstrate various aspects of contemporary performance-practice.  Most of the session is then devoted to encouraging music students to develop these new skills through performance of music ranging from Morley to Arne on their chosen instruments. Music copies will be made available in advance.

Meanwhile, drama and English students work with our actor, Keith Briars, of Derby Shakespeare Theatre Company, who explains his approach to pacing and characterisation. They join him to perform a short scene at the end of the session, when the music students also present what they have rehearsed.

Scenes will be chosen from plays, selected by agreement with the school or college to suit their curriculum requirements, which may include: Twelfth night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, The Tempest, The Merchant of Venice, Hamlet and As you like it.
