Active as a composer, violinist and improviser, Carmel Raz has performed at major music venues across the world, including concert halls in Japan, the United States, Israel, Russia, and Europe. As concertmaster of the Young Israel Philharmonic and Daniel Barenboim’s West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, she attended the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, Germany, before continuing her studies at the University of Chicago.

Her music has been performed in New York, Chicago, Cincinnati, Berlin, Saarbrucken, and Tel-Aviv by ensembles and artists such as Cliff Colnot, the Pacifica Quartet, Vox Novus, members of Eighth Blackbird, the Fire Escape Film Festival, the NY Miniaturist Ensemble and the Music06 quartet. Honours include a Mellon Graduate Achievement Fellowship at the University of Chicago, as well as support from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation and the Tel-Aviv Academy of Music. In 2006, Carmel was appointed resident composer of the Millennium Chamber Players, a chamber ensemble based in Chicago. Among her upcoming projects are a commission by the Van Buren String Quartet, as well as world premieres in Chicago (Midwest Graduate Music Consortium Conference), New York City (American Composer’s Association) and San Diego (NOISE Ensemble).

Julia Black, a violinist with Musica Donum Dei, who was mainly responsible for organising the competition, described Carmel Raz’s piece as “...a mysterious walk in the forest, combined with a witty treatment of the theme."

Carmel Raz commented “Through juxtaposing repertoire ranging from the 17th to the 21st century, Musica Donum Dei provides its listeners with new ways of hearing both traditional and contemporary music. I would like to thank the ensemble for its unusual competition theme, which inspired me to transform the pre-existing melody into an instrumental piece.”

The competition received financial support from the Friends of Musica Donum Dei
