In this course we shall focus on continental music from the 15th to the 18th centuries, placing it in a cultural and historical framework,[ and allowing some comparison with contemporary British music]. We shall consider a few works in detail : a chanson by Binchois, a Mass by Palestrina, an Italian madrigal an opera by Monteverdi and a dramatic work by Rameau. Members of the course will be encouraged to choose the topics for study.

In this course we shall explore the music of Handel - Britain's
most popular composer and one of the greatest composers of the
eighteenth century, perhaps of all time. We shall look at his
international career, in Germany, Italy and England in a world
where tastes were changing radically and new forms and styles
evolving . We shall listen to a wide selection of works from his
vast output, particularly in the fields of opera, oratorio and
concerto. We shall also try to place him in historical context
with the help of contemporary writings, and see how Handel was
influenced by other musicians and artists.

In this course we shall explore music inspired by Shakespeare, from delicate song-settings of the 17th and 18th centuries by Johnson, Morley and Arne, to Thomas Linley's Ode on the Fairies and Witches, programmatic works such as Mendellsohn's Midsummer Night's Dream Overture, symphonic poems by Berlioz and Strauss, and operas by Purcell, and Britten
